Man imprisoned in terrorism case with links to Hamas and criminal gangs
A 28-year-old man was remanded in custody today in connection with a terrorism case that began with a series of arrests in 2023. The case has links to both Hamas and criminal gangs in Denmark.
The remand custody is part of a case connected to a large-scale operation, where the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) together with several police districts made a number of arrests across Denmark in December 2023.
"At the time, we described the arrests as a security operation where we intervened early in the process because we suspected that a network of individuals was planning a terrorist attack. Since the arrests, we have conducted intensive investigation, and today, the Prosecution Service was able to bring charges against an additional individual suspected of violating anti-terrorism law. PET and the Prosecution Service believe that this individual purchased drones intended for use by Hamas in a terrorist attack at an unknown location in Denmark or abroad. The court agreed today that there is reasonable suspicion in this matter, and, on that basis, decided to remand the suspect in custody," said Flemming Drejer, Head of Operations at PET.
The individual in question was imprisoned in absentia in December 2023, as he was located abroad at the time. He was later extradited to Denmark. PET and the Prosecution Service believe that the individual is a leading figure in a prohibited gang and has ties to Hamas.
"It is of course deeply concerning if we have a terrorism case on Danish soil with links to an organization like Hamas. And I want to emphasize that if parts of the gang environment in Denmark are moving onto a path where terrorist attacks are being planned, those individuals will draw the full attention of PET - whether they are in Denmark or abroad. We have made significant progress in this case, but the investigation continues, and it is too early to say where it will lead," said Flemming Drejer.
As previously stated by PET, the conflict in the Middle East continues to have a spillover effect on the threat landscape in Denmark more than a year after Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. The most recent Assessment of the Terrorist Threat to Denmark, published in April 2025, states that the conflict holds considerable potential for mobilization that may prompt a number of spontaneous or premeditated reactions, including terrorist attacks, from various known and unknown threat actors. The conflict has been the cause of several attacks and foiled attacks in the West, aimed particularly at Jewish and Israeli interests.
As a result of the conflict in the Middle East, PET has already introduced a number of security measures, such as operative recommendations for the police focusing on more extensive protection of Israeli and Jewish interests in Denmark.
