The Special Intervention Unit

The Special Intervention Unit is an operational special unit at PET whose primary task is to maintain an operational counterterrorism response capacity and assist the rest of the Danish police during particularly difficult or dangerous assignments. These might include hostage rescue, particularly dangerous arrests and assignments related to counterterrorism.

The assignments of the Special Intervention Unit include counterterrorism efforts, special personal protection assignments, special surveillance assignments, hostage rescue and personal protection in high-risk areas as well as the planning, management and execution of complex deployments.

The Special Intervention Unit cooperates closely with the rest of the Danish police and with special units from the armed forces, which for instance provide assistance in the form of personnel and ordnance for operational assignments and joint training.

As part of the national counterterrorism response, the armed forces provide permanent support in the form of a helicopter response team. Thus, the Special Intervention Unit can be deployed quickly by air in a counterterrorism operation or other foreseen/unforeseen operations.
