The Faroe Islands Police is an independent police district that is led by a police director and is - like the Danish police districts - subject to the Ministry of Justice, the National Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Six police stations

The police district is divided into three police departments: North, Central and South. The main station is located in Tórshavn, from where all patrols and emergency calls are coordinated from. In addition, there are five local stations in Klaksvík, Runavík, Sandi, Tvøroyri and at Vágar Airport.

Danish and Faroese law

The Faroe Islands Police and employees operate under two political systems and legislation – both the Danish system and the Faroese system.

Faroese police officers are trained at the Police Academy in Denmark and complete an internship in a Danish police distict. The Faroe Islands Police itself selects applicants for police training who, after completing their education in Denmark, serve in the Faroe Islands.

There is limited exchange between Danish and Faroese police officers.

Faroe Islands Police's website

The Faroese name of the Faroe Islands Police is Føroya Politi, and the website is only offered in Faroese language.
